What can our specialists do for you?

Chickenpox is a highly contagious virus that mainly manifests in children and causes a red itchy rash to develop on the skin. In most cases it's completely harmless and the symptoms will disappear within about a week. However, a minority of cases will develop complications. With young babies and those with an already weakened immune system particularly at risk.
The chickenpox vaccine protects against the varicella virus responsible for chickenpox. It's recommended for anyone who hasn't had the virus and is considered high risk. This group includes adults who never contracted the disease as an infant. Particularly pregnant women, as chickenpox during pregnancy has been linked to the onset of serious birth defects.
The vaccine is administered in two doses and is designed to stimulate the immune system to naturally develop the antibodies necessary to prevent chickenpox from developing. The injections are usually to the upper arm and delivered between 4-8 weeks apart by specially trained clinicians in our own PDC locations.
