Private Smear Test
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common virus transmitted through sexual contact. High Risk subtypes of HPV (HR-HPV) are linked to the development of abnormal cells and can cause cervical cancer. HPV is a necessary cause of invasive cervical cancer. Evidence shows HPV testing is a more effective way to identify women at risk of cervical cancer than by testing microscopically for abnormal cells from a PAP smear.
Eight out of ten people will be infected from the virus at some point of their lives in the UK. The virus mostly occurs on fingers hands, mouth and genitals. There are many different types of HPV from which most are harmless, but around 30 of them can cause cervical cancer (source: Cancer Research UK).
In 2017 the UK NHS Cervical Screening Programme (CSP) recommended that testing for HPV should replace cytology as the first (primary test) in cervical screening.
If HPV is DETECTED/POSITIVE, cervical cytology (PAPT) will be processed AT NO EXTRA CHARGE. The PAPT will be processed from the same vial which means you don’t have to carry out another smear.
A smear test cannot be performed during a period so please book when you are not bleeding. The best time to have a smear test is 2 weeks after your period ends. You also cannot have a repeat smear test within 3 months of your last smear.
Women aged between 25 and 49 are recommended by the NHS to have a smear test every three years, and women aged between 50 and 64 every five years.
